Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in Naxos

As in all islands of the Cyclades, so in the biggest one of them, Naxos, the winds blow all year round. Especially during summer, the northern winds called "meltemia" create the perfect conditions for two sports that have many enthusiastic devotees: windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The meltemia (plural of meltemi) are strong, dry north winds that blow from about mid-May to mid-September. They come up without warning and usually blow their hardest in the afternoon, calming down at night; sometimes, however, they can last for days without a break. Similar winds blow in the Ionian and Adriatic regions, as well. Also, the same winds blow in Cyprus, yet they are more humid in that region.

Meltemi winds can be sometimes dangerous for sailors; but if you love sailing, windsurfing or kitesurfing, you simply love them!
